LAKEVIEW — The Lakeview Wildcats are off to a tough start for the 2012 boys soccer season.

The Wildcats do not have a win in their first four contests against Big Rapids, Reed City, Greenville and Alma. Their last game, on Aug. 29, was a close 5-3 loss to Alma.

Timmy Reed, Jacob Tanis and Nate Shurlow each scored a goal.

Reed and Tanis are returning letterwinners along with Judd Girskis, Nick Heath, Evan Saxton, Nate Davis, Austin Moore, Caleb Ruvalcaba and Lucas Sweet..

Lakeview coach Chris Smith said he has a very coachable team.

“They are willing to work hard and easily coachable,” he said. “They are open to changes, playing different positions and formations.”

Like a year ago (6-11-1 overall in 2011) the Wildcats are a young team. Just one of the returning letterwinners is a senior. Five of them are sophomores.

With the youth, a goal for the Wildcats is to improve the team chemistry and controlling play.

“We feel that we can be a competitive team that can make use of multiple formations and move players around in order to give ourselves the best opportunity to win,” Smith said.

The Lakeview core of Reed, Girskis, Saxton and Heath are in their third year together on the team

“I look to them for leadership on and off the field as we add in second year players and new faces,” Smith said.

The CSAA saw a change when Newaygo was added as a conference member. Newaygo increase the number of league soccer programs to four along with Reed City and Big Rapids.

“I am expecting a tight and exciting race this season,” Smith said. “Any of us are capable of a win on any given night.”

The Wildcats return to action tonight as they travel to Cedar Springs. They host Shepherd on Thursday and will play in the Big Rapids Crossroads Invitational on Saturday.
