STANTON — Montcalm County Sheriff Barnwell has announced a school bus safety initiative, which started the first week of school.
Utilizing a grant-funded traffic deputy, enforcement efforts focusing on school bus red light violators will be increased. The deputy will be periodically following busses on runs and will stop observed violators. This will compliment the reporting procedure, already in place, of violators by bus drivers.
School safety efforts have been a challenge in the past with the limited resources at the sheriff’s office. This is an effort for directed patrols to focus on the problem of illegally passing school busses with red lights on.
Barnwell hopes to enhance student safety, lower the number of violations and heighten the awareness of drivers.
This initiative has been implemented in conjunction with Montcalm County area school districts.
