COLUMBUS, Ohio — Members of the DuHadway Dance Dimensions Elite Competition attended the national championships for Applause Talent Competition the week of July 5 in Columbus, Ohio.
They traveled with 68 dancers ages 8 to 18 from the communities of Alma, Carson City, Crystal, Ithaca, Merrill, Mount Pleasant, Shepherd, St. Louis and Swan Valley. The dancers performed more than 50 different dance pieces and most placed in the top 10 or higher.
Contemporary soloist Kerry McCrackin of Carson City won with her solo and then competed in the Best of the Best competition on the final day. McCrackin and her dance partner, Rachel Pawson of Alma, also won with their contemporary duet and went on to win the Best of the Best finals. A jazz piece titled “Ballroom Blitz” also competed in the Best of the Best which included all the Carson City-Crystal dancers along with a dozen dancers from neighboring communities.
Six graduating seniors, including Kerry McCrackin and Kaitlynn McCrackin, both of Carson City, Lindsey Himes of Mount Pleasant, Hannah Nass and Chelsea Nowlin of Alma and Rebecca Moffett of Ithaca were awarded first place overall with their small group contemporary piece titled “Wise Up,” continuing their success with the performance of their large group hip hop piece titled “Cinema.” The 15 dancers won with choreography by Bird Clarkson and continued on to win the Best of the Best finals. They were awarded a special trophy as the highest scoring routine of the entire competition.
Other notable performances included senior soloists Hannah Nass, Rebecca Moffett and Chelsea Nowlin placing second, third and fourth to McCrackin. Tap duo Charlie DuHadway and Laura Lowe, both of Alma, placed second to McCrackin and Pawson in the senior duet category. Nass and DuHadway and Lowe were chosen by the judges for a VIP pass into the Best of the Best finals along with a junior large group titled “I Hate Boys” receiving a VIP pass. The Best of the Best includes the top scoring dances of the week in a dance off to win the title of dance of the year.
The exclamation point on the season was “Cinema” being voted as dance of the year on the Federation of Dance website from a field of hundreds of dances that were nominated throughout the regional season.
Other local dancers included Shalie Borton of Crystal, Kelsey Dennis of Carson City, Sarah McCrackin of Carson City, Abby Postema of Crystal and Kayla Tabor of Carson City.
The DuHadway Elite team is lead by studio directors Jillian and Rob DuHadway and coached by additional artistic team members Aubrey Gulick, Kalie Dickman and Bird Clarkson.
