MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — Three firefighters from the Montcalm Township Fire Department have been selected to receive advance training to help further their skills.

During Wednesday night’s meeting, the Montcalm Township Board of Trustees approved sending three firefighters to the training at a cost of $80 each.

“I would encourage that,” said Supervisor Michael Adams.

Montcalm Township Fire Board Chairman Ron Trachet said the class will be focusing on advanced extrication to help better the firefighters at fire scenes.

Fire Chief Clif Dickinson — who has received this training — said the class is more advanced than what is taught when firefighters go through their initial training.

“(Firefighters) get more detail,” Dickinson said. “The class talks about bigger vehicles and what to do when someone is pinned in and the vehicle is on its top.”

After the board approved the request, Trachet thanked them.

“Thank you, that was important,” he told the board.

In other business, the board clarified Tom Smith, trustee and owner of Turk Lake Bar & Restaurant, is opening a brew pub and not a microbrewery.
