Cross country

Belding wins, finishes second at Sparta: The Redskin boys were the best team in the White Division of the Sparta Invitational Saturday, as they scored 75 points. The girls were second behind Grand Rapids South Christian’s 48. Belding’s boys got a fifth from Eric Rasch (17:21.27), a sixth from Justin Belding (17:21.93), a ninth from Trevor Curtis (17:42.86), a 12th from Sam Syrjala (17:51.36) and a 13th from Mitchell Jenks (17:57.40). For the girls, Monica Baylis was ninth (20:06.27), Teresa Myles was 12th (21:25.12), Rachel Warner was 18th (21:42.54), Joesi Krieger was 19th (21:50.18) and Mariah Carlson was 25th (22:20.06). Next meet: at Sparta for an O-K Blue Conference jamboree Wednesday.

Montabella girls win, boys second: The Mustangs ran at the Harrison Invitational Saturday and finished with a win and a second. The Montabella girls won with 75 points, getting a second from Taylor Smith (20:53), a third from Kensington Garvey (22:31), a ninth from Alyviah Karcher (24:12), a 32ns from Kim Buskirk (27:04) and a 40th from Sarah Miller (28:16). The boys finished with 85 points, just behind Midland Bullock Creek, getting a sixth from Parker Eldred (19:22), a ninth from Kelton Eldred (19:44), an 11th from Christian Watson (19:46), a 23rd from Austin Garner (20:58) and a 38th ftrom Nick Moulter (22:06). Next meet: at the MSAC jamboree at Carson City-Crystal Wednedsay.

Greenville ninth, fourth at Sparta: The Yellow Jackets finished ninth in boys and fourth in girls in the Blue Division at the Sparta Invitational Saturday. The boys scored 218 points, led by Kyle Reamer with a 31st (18:24.41) and Scott Scripter with a 33rd (18:24.72). Ken Wood added a 42nd (18:39.54), Chris Jacobsen added a 54th (18:57.44) and Jared Downing added a 59th (19:28.25). The girls scored 116 points, led by Sarah Austin in 15th (21:45.85) and Madison Sorsen with a 21st (22:11.04). Ali Loding was 24th (22:28.82), Clarice Callahan was 25th (22:47.34) and Julia Hansen was 31st (22:59.19). Next meet: at the O-K Bronze Conference jamboree Wednesday.

Central 10th twice at Sparta: The Green Hornets were 10th in both the boys and girls races in the White Division at the Sparta Invitational Saturday. The boys got 267 points, with Tyler Sleet finishing eighth (17:34.43), Aaron Daggett finishing 53rd (20:00.08), Cody Veltkamp finishing 67th (21:18.83), Joseph Baldwin finishing 69th (21:25.35) and Jeremy Palinkas finishing 70th (22:00.91). On the girls side, Scylar Blaisdell was 53rd (25:39.80), Kaila Kosten was 56th (26:11.15), Sophie Johnson was 58th (26:29.24), Beth Wheeler was 63rd (27:15.76) and Caden Everingham was 67th (28:30.04) for 282 points. Next meet: at Reed City for a CSAA jamboree Tuesday.

Lakeview shorthanded at Sparta: The Wildcats didn’t have enough boy or girl runners to get a team score at the Sparta Invitational Saturday. However boy runners Benett Tomandl finished 57th (21:19.36), Devin Cornell finished 70th (22:44.13) and Austin Peterson finished 77th (27:09.59) in the Silver Division. The girls got a 43rd from Lexi Bates (25:42.70), a 51st from Audry Cornell (26:45.09), a 60th from abbi Andersen (28:12.65) and a 67th from Colleen Andersen (37:58.05). Next meet: at Reed City for a CSAA jamboree Tuesday.

Volleyball

Lakeview 2-2-1 at Big Rapids: The Wildcats were 1-1-1 in pool play, beating Tri County 25-17, 26-24, losing to Sparta 25-19, 25-18, then splitting 25-21 games with Newaygo. Lakeview needed three games to dispatch Manton 16-25, 26-24, 15-4, but lost for the second straight tournament to Grant 25-22, 25-11. Erin Vanderzand was the leader in kills with 00, Estelle Molitor dished out 66 assists, Chelsea Lint had a team-high 16 digs and Lauren Jaquays, Rebecca Matthews and Mackenzie Oberl each had three blocks. Next match: at Chippewa Hills Tuesday.
