BELDING — Belding High School student Austin Gilman, 16, who was injured in an accident Thursday afternoon, is now in fair condition at Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Gilman was injured while crossing M-44 at Ionia Street at 4:18 p.m. Thursday when he was struck by a GMC Yukon SUV driven by a woman from Ionia.

He was crossing the road during a cross country practice after school.

Gilman was originally listed in critical condition upon arriving at the hospital via ambulance.

Nelson said the driver of the vehicle was wearing her seatbelt and does not appear to be at fault in the accident, however, the investigation is ongoing.
