GREEVILLE — Kody Gard hasn’t been racing long, but he’s a race champion.
Gard, of Greenville, won the purple plate novice division at Vestaburg Kart Speedway this season. He beat Carson Ron of Mount Pleasant by 847 points.
The nine-year-old Gard made 15 feature races in the division and finished first seven times and second six more times. Gard never finished worse than fourth in any of the feature races.
“Everybody was really impressed with how he improved over he winter,” his grandfather Mike Kodat said. “He just picked right up with it. He’s been driving things with motors around since he was two or three.”
Not bad for Gard’s first full year of racing.
“I’m surprised, really impressed, really proud,” Kodat said.
Kodat wanted his grandson to get into racing.
“I’ve always been interested in racing and I had him driving things around,” he said. “I just wanted to get him racing.”
Everyone was impressed, but Gard said it felt “good” to win.
“I raised my fist,” Gard said.
Gard’s gradnfather may have been surprised, but Gard said wasn’t.
Gard will move up a class of karts for next season, Kodat said. Gard will be moving up to the purple plate intermediate class. He said he thinks he’ll do “real good” in that class.
“Eventually he wants to drive race cars,” Kodat said.
