BUSHNELL TOWNSHIP — A body was located inside a building after a barn fire early this morning just south of the village of Sheridan.

The Sheridan Community Fire Department responded to the fire at 2:34 a.m. to 6681 S. Sheridan Road (M-66) north of Sessions Road.

Numerous other fire departments responded to the scene to assist, including Carson City, Crystal Township, Ronald Township and Stanton Community fire departments, along with Montcalm County Emergency Services.

Detectives were immediately dispatched to the scene and the state fire marshal was requested. Officers are at the scene this morning.

The property is owned by Phebe Wilson of Sheridan, mother of State Sen. Judy Emmons, R-Sheridan.

Mother and daughter are fine and don’t know who died in the barn fire.

“It was a long night,” Emmons told The Daily News this morning. “Hopefully they’ll be able to identify the body.”

Montcalm County Sheriff’s Det. Rob McVey told The Daily News the barn is destroyed and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“All we can tell you is we have a very badly burned body, down to unrecognizable,” McVey said. “At this point we don’t know the identification of the individual, it will depend on further results with the lab, as well as possible dental records. It’s a mystery to us right now.”
