Fifteen-year-old Belding High School student, Sarah Thompson, decided to take her love of acting to another level when she competed in a regional iPOP competition in Lansing.

Little did the Belding resident know this would lead to her winning the commercial competition and a spot to audition in Los Angeles.

Thompson spent most of the summer inside rehearsing lines with her mother before taking her first flight out west. Once in Los Angeles, Thompson was keenly aware of the difference in lifestyle though surprised she should have packed warmer clothes for the chilly California mornings.

Acting was always something in Thompson’s blood. Though this is the first year the Belding student will be part of the drama department at school, she was dubbed “Little Diva” by her older siblings and parents when she was younger.

Her primary interest is acting though it was suggested she also enter the modeling competition in Lansing. She was advised she could work in commercial modeling, such as make up giant Cover Girl. Her height is just less than the desired five-feet-seven desired for most runway modeling.

True to her first love, Thompson headed west to hopefully win a contract with an agency to help promote an acting career. She spent July 1 through the 5 in Los Angeles and though she missed being home for the 4th of July, she still marveled at what she had accomplished and where that had landed her.

“I would see stars everywhere and everyone played it cool, but I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s Usher!’” Thompson said. “I was expecting people to be really intimidating because we were competing, but everyone was really friendly.”

Though the shine of stardom is enticing, Thompson still has her feet firmly planted on the ground.

She recognizes part of her dreams have been realized by being signed with The Crawford Agency, but Thompson also knows she needs to have another option in her life to be successful. When the time comes to attend college, she has considered going to Florida where she has family. She also loves the sunny climate and has thought about studying marine biology.

The Crawford Agency requires its talents maintain a 3.0 grade point average and allows their clientèle to send in audition tapes to prevent school absences. Ultimately, Thompson would love to star in a television series, especially a comedy. Her favorite actress is Sandra Bullock for her versatility and seemingly fun personality. It was The Disney Channel that spurred young Sarah’s dreams.

“I remember watching The Disney Channel and thinking, ‘I could do this,’” Thompson remarked with enthusiasm.

Through the entire process of entering the iPOP competition and rehearsing for auditions in Los Angeles, Thompson’s family and friends have been supportive. For the time being, Thompson is involved in the spring production of “Seussical the Musical” and Future Farmers of America, Belding Chapter.
