CATO TOWNSHIP — An elderly Lakeview couple was rescued Thursday afternoon after their sailboat capsized in Tamarack Lake.
According to Montcalm County Sheriff’s Lt. Steve Russell, John London and his wife, Lee, had been sailing in gusty winds when their boat capsized around 12:30 p.m. The Londons were wearing life jackets and were able to swim to a small island. A neighbor observed the incident and called 911.
The Lakeview Police Department and sheriff’s deputies responded to the scene and commandeered a small motorboat tethered near the west shore of the lake. Officers used the boat to make contact with the Londons, who were wet and shivering on the island.
Officers stayed with the Londons until a larger sheriff’s patrol boat arrived to transport them back to shore.
The Londons were treated by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services at the scene for exposure, but were otherwise uninjured.
