MONTCALM TOWNSHIP — A 24-year old Rockford man is in custody after being arrested for drunken driving after he ran over a gravestone at the Montcalm Township Cemetery on Johnson Road.
Montcalm County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a report of someone running over headstones in the cemetery at 11:07 p.m. Sunday night.
During the investigation, deputies determined the man was drunk.
“This is a gentleman that definitely needed to be arrested and taken off the road,” Montcalm County Undersheriff Mark Bellinger said. “When deputies arrived, he was stuck on one of the headstones. We don’t know why he was (driving over headstones).”
He was arrested for a third offense felony, operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated and driving while license revoked and assaulting the deputies.
“Those charges are being reviewed right now by the prosecutor’s office,” Bellinger said. “This is the third time that he has been arrested for drunk driving, which upgrades it to a felony.”
Further charges in connection with the damaged headstone are possible.
