GREENVILLE — Two local women were charged with multiple felonies after allegedly stealing from the Greenville Wal-Mart and then assaulting store employees.

Greenville Department of Public Safety officers responded to the Greenville Wal-Mart at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday after the store’s loss prevention officers attempted to stop three subjects for retail fraud and a fight then began.

Officers arrived to find the subjects being escorted to the loss prevention office. Further investigation showed the subjects loaded a plastic tote inside a shopping cart with various merchandise from the store and then attempted to leave the store with the tote, without paying for any of the items, which totaled about $150 in value.

The subjects allegedly became verbally and physically combative once they were stopped by loss prevention officers. A store employee attempted to assist the loss prevention officers and that employee was also assaulted.

Candy Sue Shattuck, 33, of Greenville, and Victoria Dawn Merrified, 17, of Ionia, were arrested and transported to the Montcalm County Jail in Stanton. The third subject was released at the scene after officers were able to determine her role and lack of participation in the event.

Merrifield was charged with three counts of felony unarmed robbery and Shattuck was charged with two counts of felony unarmed robbery and one count of assault and battery.

Both women were arraigned Wednesday in 64B District Court in Stanton and received a $10,000 cash/surety bond from jail.
