CARSON CITY — Carson City-Crystal’s volleyball team came into the 2012 season having endured a tough season in the Central Michigan Athletic Conference.
What a change of scenery will do.
The Eagles faced a Mid-State Activities Conference that wasn’t as brutal as the CMAC and it helped the team to a second-place finish in the MSAC.
CC-Crystal finished 24-17-11 overall and 4-1 in the MSAC. That one loss was to the conference champion Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.
“I feel that our team did very well this season,” coach Megan Merlo said. “We had a good mix of seniors and younger players that all worked well together to really make this season a success. They are willing to work hard and truly want to get better everyday.”
In fact, the standout players in Merlo’s eyes all were named to the MSAC all-conference teams.
Ending up on the first team was Emily Ward and Jaylin Fisher, while second-team honors went to Tomberlee Smith.
Tori Christensen and Kali Donahue each received an honorable mention in the conference.
Merlo is looking forward to next season because of those players who weren’t seniors.
“I am very hopeful for next season,” she noted. “We have eight players returning to the varsity team next year and three of those started for us this year. I think we will be able to build on this season and continue to move forward.”
Last season the Eagles were 23-22-8 overall in Merlo’s first season as coach.
