PIERSON TOWNSHIP – A person of interest is in custody after a 31-year-old Pierson Township woman was found assaulted and murdered early this morning.

Montcalm County Central Dispatch received a 911 call at 3:58 a.m. reporting an assault and an unresponsive person.

Officers arrived at a home in the 4000 block of Whitefish Woods Drive off Kendaville Road near the Newaygo County border to find an adult female who had been murdered.

“We are treating it as a homicide,” confirmed Undersheriff Mark Bellinger. “We don’t believe it was random. It’s an active investigation.”

Bellinger declined to release any details about how the woman was murdered.

According to Sheriff Bill Barnwell, a person of interest is now in custody. The investigation continues.
