CRYSTAL TOWNSHIP — A public meeting to seek input on the potential return of a historic carousel to Crystal was hosted by the Crystal Township Historical Society (CTHS) on Oct. 25.

The meeting garnered a large audience of residents, business owners, community organizations and some past residents that drove great distances just to attend the meeting and offer their input.

Following a brief introduction and review of the carousel’s history by CTHS President David Wight, the meeting turned to the possibility of the carousel’s return and responses to the inquiry from the Michigan State University Museum organization, which currently has the carousel.

There was unanimous support from all attendees that an effort must be made to bring the carousel back to Crystal. The carousel was a central part of Crystal’s history and what better location to preserve it for future generations than the location where it entertained past generations for over 40 years? Attendees also expressed that it would be important to house the carousel in a facility fitting to its historical age and to have the carousel fully restored and operational in time to celebrate the carousel’s 100th birthday in 2016.

Possible locations for the carousel were discussed and the group identified four possible locations where a facility could be constructed to house the carousel. One resident indicated that he was the last one to operate the carousel in Crystal, was very familiar with its care and maintenance and would like to see it back in Crystal.

There was an extensive discussion around the necessary funding that would be required for the carousel project. Wight explained that numerous pledges of support had already been received; however, until Crystal residents are assured of the carousel’s return, significant efforts to raise funds will be postponed.

Several attending members volunteered to form a Crystal carousel work group and are  writing a proposal to submit to the MSU Museum. Let your voice be heard, and show your support for returning the carousel to Crystal by sending a letter of support. All letters will be included in the proposal to the MSU Museum.

Letters can be mailed to CTHS, Box 169, Crystal, Mich. 48818 or emailed to CTHS@crystalhistory.net
