Montabella’s Parker Eldred (3) tries to corral a rebound between Lakeview’s John Zulugua-Torres (25) and Shawn Lindsey (20) and Montabella’s Nate Jankowsky (behind Lindsey) during the teams’ game Monday night.

LAKEVIEW — Boys basketball season is underway, but Montabella would have liked to have waited a few days.

The Mustangs made only 11 field goals against Lakeview Monday night to lose 60-37 in the season opener for both teams.

“They (Lakeview) made their baskets and we didn’t,” Montabella coach Gary Jankowsky said. “We had good looks. They just didn’t fall for us.”

“It was nice to be home to get the first win,” Lakeview coach Mike Schrieber said.

The Wildcats (1-0) got out to a 16-5 run in the first 6 ½ minutes of the first quarter, led by 10 from Shawn Lindsey

“They had some good looks,” Schrieber said. “It wasn’t like we played stellar on defense. We definitely know that’s an area that we have to work harder on than in the past.”

Jankowsky agreed.

“Our kids played hard. They (Lakeview) made their baskets,” he said.

Leading 20-5 after one quarter, the Wildcats jumped out again to start the second quarter, going on an 8-2 run over the first four minutes for a 28-7 lead.

“We switched our defense a little bit and got out on the shooters a little bit more,” Jankowsky said. “It slowed them down a little bit.”

Meanwhile the shots continued to rim out for the Mustangs (0-1), as they got only four field goals to trail 33-17 at the break.

The game was blown open in the third quarter, as the Lakeview went out on a 16-0 run over the first 6:08 of the quarter to put the game away.

“They (Lakeview) played OK defensively for a first time out, I think,” Schrieber said. “We saw what we did wrong, too.”

The Wildcats got 17 points from Nate Shurlow and 16 from Lindsey. No other Wildcat had more than five, but all but two scored.

“What I really like to see was I didn’t sub(stitute) just to sub,” Schrieber said. “When I put a guy in they were actually meshing in well, and it wasn’t like a fifth wheel or a third wheel, just stumbling. We were still able to execute, and for a non-starter that’s what we need to do, keep churning and we did a nice job of that coming off the bench tonight.”

Montabella’s top scorer was Nate Jankowsky with 11.

Lakeview will open Central State Activities Association play Thursday when they go to Morley Stanwood, while Montabella will try to get on track Thursday against Coleman at home.

“Just keep working hard, get better defensively. We’re going to keep shooting and hopefully they fall,” Gary Jankowsky said.
