GREENVILLE — A Greenville man reported his safe was stolen — and then was arrested when police located the contents of the safe.
The Greenville Department of Public Safety responded to call of a portable safe that was stolen from a home at about 1:20 a.m. Monday in the 400 block of Orange Street.
Dennis Ortiz, 56, of Greenville, gave information to police that led to a possible suspect.
Greenville police, along with troopers from the Michigan State Police Lakeview Post, located a suspect, Brandi Lynn Adams, 35, of Greenville, hiding in a basement in the 200 block of N. Osmun St.
Adams was arrested and the safe was recovered. Most of the safe’s contents were hidden in a different area of the house, and were also recovered — prompting a criminal investigation of Ortiz.
The safe had contained a large sum of money and several prescription pills that were sorted by medication.
Police developed “probable cause,” leading to the arrest of Ortiz and a search warrant for his house. The search resulted in the recovery of three handguns, marijuana and packaging material.
Adams was arraigned Monday in 64B District Court in Stanton and charged with two felony counts of larceny in a building and safe breaking.
Ortiz was was also arraigned Monday and charged with possession of controlled substances — a 20-year felony — and maintaining a drug house — a two-year misdemeanor.
