STANTON — A big night for Central Montcalm High School saw a disappointing end.

The “Orange Out” game to raise money for juvenile diabetes research went to the visiting Chippewa Hills Warriors 50-38 Friday night.

“It’s bad because it was such a big night for our school and we had a big crowd,” noted Central coach Kevin Everingham. “But it makes it easier that the game was about raising money for juvenile diabetes research. So the girls can feel good even without a win.”

The Green Hornets were able to stay with the Warriors for the first quarter, trailing only 12-10 after those eight minutes.

But Central scored only four points in the second quarter.

“The girls start getting a little frustrated,” Everingham said. “Chip(pewa Hills) was running a press and it was working so we started throwing it away, stated throwing up shots that weren’t falling.”

Everingham tried to make adjustments at halftime, when they were trailing 23-14.

“We changed up our offense and defense at halftime,” he said. “We went to a press right off the bat when we came out after halftime.”

It helped, as the Hornets shaved a point off the deficit to trail 34-26 with a quarter to go.

But the Warriors made free throws and Central didn’t. In fact, the Hornets were just 10-of-30 from the free-throw line.

“They (Central) are not playing the way I like, but much better,” Everingham said. “They had a rough start but they’re finally getting into it and playing better. I think our problem was missing free throws.”

Central got a team-high eight points from Michaela Crooks. Kaden Everingham, Ashton Bohen and Brittany Brasington had seven each.

Hannah Guy was Chippewa Hills’ leading scorer with 22.

The Hornets will head to White Cloud Tuesday.
