HOWARD CITY — Carson City-Crystal’s wrestling team added to their good start to the season Saturday.
The Eagles went undefeated to win the six-team Tri County Invitational.
CC-Crystal (7-0) started out with a 42-36 win over Cedar Springs, then beat Belding 48-18 for the Redskins’ only loss.
The Eagles downed the host Vikings 41-39 for the third win, topped Lakeview 58-21 for the fourth and hammered Morley-Stanwood 60-15 for the fifth.
“We had a good performance,” CC-Crystal coach Kacy Datema said.
There were five different Eagles who were undefeated. Ken Dittenber (119 pounds), Dallas O’Green (125), Garner Cusack (140), Dylan Decker (145) and Darren Decker (152) were also 5-0 on the day.
“Cedar Springs was a fairly close match,” Datema said. “We started at 125 so we knew coming around we had some of our horses coming up. Dittenber was our last match and we were fairly confident he would get the win for us.”
Belding’s 4-1 record was led by Jesse Schidel (125) and Todd Haller (215), who were undefeated for Belding.
“Carson’s got a good squad. It was fun to wrestle them,” Belding coach Travis Meyer said. “It was fun to get some kids some matches this early in the season.”
Belding’s wins were 54-21 over Lakeview, 45-32 over Cedar Springs, 43-26 over Tri County and 60-15 over Morley Stanwood.
“We wrestled Lakeview and Cedar (Springs) and they beat us in the tournament last year so it was good to beat them,” Meyer said.
Tri County finished third with wins over Morley Stanwood 65-17, Lakeview 65-15 and Cedar Springs 52-21.
“Our light weights wrestled very well today,” Tri County coach Corey Renner said. “We have some pretty good kids who can’t get into the lineup right now because our lower weights are tough. Its a nice problem to have, and they are making each other better.”
Austin Sprik (285), Jesse Britton (130) and Mick McGhan (103) were the 5-0 Vikings at the tournament.
Lakeview’s only win was over Morley Stanwood 54-21.
“We’re a young team that’s composed primarily of freshmen,” Lakeview coach Todd Barton said. “I feel like our freshmen are competing well for freshmen, keeping in mind the majority are wrestling juniors and seniors. For our first real meet I’m impressed with their hard work and dedication.”
The only undefeated Wildcat was 189-pounder Gus Ward.
Next up for CC-Crystal will be a trip to Grandville Calvin Christian for a quadrangular Wednesday. Belding (5-1) will host Grand Rapids Creston Thursday, Lakeview is at Fremont for a quad Wednesday and Tri County will go to Newaygo for a quad Wednesday.
