Ionia County now taking applications for treasurer

IONIA — With the recent passing of Nancy Hickey, who was elected to the position of Ionia County treasurer for a four-year term beginning Jan. 1, 2013, Michigan election law requires that a statutorily created committee consisting of Probate Judge Robert Sykes Jr., Prosecutor Ronald Schafer and Clerk Tonda Rich shall appoint a suitable person to fill the vacancy.

The committee will accept letters of interest and resumes from suitable persons until 4 p.m. Dec. 14 at the Ionia County Clerk’s Office, 100 West Main St., Ionia, Michigan 48846.

The person appointed shall hold office until the next general November election and must be a resident of Ionia County.

The treasurer serves as the county’s banker and investment officer and is primarily responsible for the safeguarding of public funds and collecting and accounting for the revenue used to operate the county. Persons interested in being considered for the appointment shall have knowledge and experience with the following: Michigan general property tax laws and related duties, including collection of delinquent real estate property taxes; accounting of tax collections of Ionia County townships, cities and villages; serving as agent of the delinquent tax revolving fund; administering of delinquent tax reversion involving title searches, property visits, court hearings, foreclosure and auction of properties; administering dog licenses; understanding of the Ionia County Land Bank.

The committee will meet at 1 p.m. Dec. 21 in the Board of Commissioners’ meeting room located on the third floor of the Ionia County Courthouse to interview persons selected for further consideration from the pool of interested persons. This meeting is open to the public.
