Johnson’s 13 points help CMU win in Florida

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The Central Michigan women’s basketball team nearly reached the century mark in Florida on Thursday night.

The Chippewas — playing in the Gator Holiday Classic — defeated Saint Joseph’s 98-84 in a game marred with 54 fouls.

Central Michigan (5-4) had six players score in double figures and was led with 16 points from senior Brandie Baker. Jessica Schroll added 15 points and Jalisa Olive 14 points. Baker also grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Chippewas drained 10 three-pointers and knocked down 34-of-46 free throws to help defeat the Hawks (5-4).

Belding High School graduate Taylor Johnson hit three three-pointers and finished with 13 points in just 14 minutes.

Johnson is averaging 8.4 points and six rebounds per game in 21 minutes of action. She has started five of nine games for the Chippewas.

Florida (9-3) defeated Savannah State 88-38 in the second game on Thursday night to set up the tournament final against Central Michigan.

Central Michigan and Florida will battle tonight at 7 p.m. in the O’Connell Center.
