NORTH PLAINS TOWNSHIP — A Crystal woman died in a Monday morning crash after her car struck a tree on Hayes Road, a half-mile south of Hogan Road in North Plains Township in Ionia County.

According to a press release from the Ionia County Sheriff’s Office, May Marek, 85, of Crystal was driving a 2005 Ford south on Hayes Road.

The vehicle went off the east side of the roadway and struck a tree.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Marek had a front-seat passenger, Betty Miller, 63, of Ionia who was transported to Ionia Sparrow Hospital.

Alcohol is not a factor and both occupants were wearing seatbelts.

The sheriff’s office is still investigating the scene and could not confirm if weather or icy roads were a factor in the accident.

Hubbardston Fire Department and Lyons/Muir first responders assisted at the scene.
