GREENVILLE — The Greenville City Council approved a liquor license for a business to produce vodka and wine in Greenville.
During Tuesday’s regular-scheduled meeting, Greenville Assistant City Manager Cameron Van Wyngarden presented to the council a recommendation to approve the license for Salacious Spirits LLC.
The company is located at 1119 Owen Mumaw Industrial Drive in Greenville and currently has a small start-up company selling Ghost Vodka — available at select stores such as Meijer.
“(Salacious Spirits) would like to have a permanent facility in Greenville,” Van Wyngarden told the council.
Currently, half of the partnership that owns the company is from Greenville, while the other half is from the east side of the state, Van Wyngarden said. After discussing business options, the duo decided to run their business from Greenville.
The products from the business will be made with Michigan products and the facility is planned to have a tasting room as well for its customers.
“(The tasting room) will allow potential customers to sample the product before purchasing,” Van Wyngarden said.
Councilman Lloyd Scoby asked if this business would bring in more people to staff the business.
Van Wyngarden answered by stating to start the business and get it off the ground, it will just be the business owners. Once the business has developed more he believes there will be room to add employees.
Salacious Spirits needed the council’s approval before going to the state. Van Wyngarden said this is the last step for the company on the production side of the plans.
If the business grows to the point where retail or other types of business wants to be added to the company, Salacious Spirits will have to come back to the city.
“I think it will be an asset to Greenville,” said Councilwoman Jeanne Cunliffe. “It would be very nice to add (this business) to Greenville.”
