Congratulations to Montcalm Community College President Bob Ferrentino, who has been appointed to the Michigan Education Trust Board of Directors.

He becomes part of a nine-person committee advising the Michigan Education Savings Program. The Michigan program lets families pre-purchase tuition costs for children living in Michigan and attending Michigan’s public two- and four-year colleges and universities.

Today will mark the inauguration of President Barack Obama for his second four years in office.

The biggest issue during — and of — the president’s time in office and the one affecting the future of the America is the fundamental stability of our country. This means the fiscal integrity of the American government. In the past four years, we have not seen a budget proposed by the Obama administration.

In light of the significant decisions that must be made not only to preserve the living standards of the majority of Americans, but to give some semblance of economic hope to our children and grandchildren, it’s time that the current administration stood up to the public and laid its cards on the table.

Perhaps Michigan’s senators Carl Levin and Debbie Stabenow could help. Our country’s fiscal deficit is rising to unprecedented heights.

On a somewhat related note, Montcalm County is scrambling for money to help with marine control and animal control.

The needs are above and beyond the basic needs for road patrols and police protection and the myriad of requests the public brings these days. But they are legitimate needs, and they point out not only a nationwide demand for more money for public services; but why responsible citizens need to become involved and advocate for or personally assist these operations.
