CATO TOWNSHIP — It is unclear to authorities what started a fire Friday evening that left a house a complete loss.

Lakeview District Fire Chief Patrick Q. Carr said they were dispatched to a structure fire at 9:42 p.m. at 6275 N. Lake Road on the Cato and Belvidere township line.

According to Carr, Bill and Sue Railling arrived home Friday evening and heard the fire in their attic. They exited the house and called 911.

“When we got there (fire) was coming through the roof,” Carr said.

It is unclear what caused the fire, Carr said, stating it could have been electrical or something to do with the fireplace at the house.

“No one was hurt,” he said.

The Lakeview District Fire Department along with Maple Valley Township Fire Department were on the scene of the fire for about four hours, Carr said.

“The structure itself is a total loss,” Carr said, noting the extensive fire and water damage, but said there might be some personal items the Raillings could save.

The homeowners did have insurance on the house.

The fire departments were assisted by Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services.
