SIDNEY TOWNSHIP — A 34-year-old Comstock Park man was arrested Saturday after striking a tree with his truck while intoxicated, fleeing the scene and eventually fighting and injuring an officer while resisting arrest.
According to the Montcalm County Sheriff’s Office, the man refused to stop when signaled after his vehicle, a 1994 Chevrolet Suburban, was observed with heavy front end damage.
Deputies’ investigation revealed the suspect’s vehicle struck a tree while his four-year-old son sat on his lap. The man sustained minor injuries, but the boy was not hurt and was turned over to a relative.
A Montcalm County deputy pursued the suspect to his mother’s residence on S. Nevins Road in Sidney Township. Once at the residence, the suspect refused to comply with the deputy’s orders and a fight ensued. The deputy suffered minor injuries in the fight.
The suspect was taken into custody and lodged at the Montcalm County Jail for fleeing and eluding, resisting and obstructing, driving while license suspended, transporting open intoxicants in a motor vehicle and child endangerment.
Open intoxicants were found inside the vehicle. The arresting deputy also observed the suspect throw an alcoholic beverage from the vehicle prior to stopping. It is believed alcohol was the main contributing factor in this incident.
The suspect is awaiting arraignment and additional charges may be filed. A copy of the report has been forwarded to the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office along with Children’s Protective Services for their review.
