PEWAMO — A fast-moving girls basketball game took place in Pewamo in the Class C district tournament Monday.

It was all Carson City-Crystal.

The Eagles used defense to down former Central Michigan Athletic Conference co-champion Laingsburg Wolfpack 31-9.

That’s no misprint; 31-9 was the final score.

“I haven’t seen it before,” CC-Crystal coach Larry Farmer. “They (Laingsburg) had the first basket and we held them scoreless for 20 game minutes.”

The Wolfpack (13-8) got a basket from Julia Angst but didn’t score again until the fourth quarter. During that time, the Eagles (18-2) scored 22 points in three quarters.

“We just pressured the ball and helped each other tremendously, played great team defense,” Farmer said.

Finally, the Wolfpack got a three-pointer from Jalynn Mitchell and Lindsay Smith and a free throw from Madison Dingman. They still couldn’t win the quarter, losing it 9-7.

“Laingsburg is a good team,” Farmer said. “They were third place in the CMAC. We just played great defense tonight. They had trouble with what we were doing.”

Meanwhile, the offense wasn’t clicking as well as the Eagles would have liked.

“We struggled. We missed some easy shots,” Farmer said. “We missed four layups. They did a good job on (Mikayla) Duflo. We’re going to need to get better offensively if we want to win the district.”

Hailey Geister was CC-Crystal’s leading scorer with just eight points, and Mackenzie Geister added seven.

Next up for the Eagles is Byron, who drew a bye in the first round of the district.

“We’re going to have to defend,” Farmer said. “They have a good inside player and she can score.”

Byron is also named the Eagles, and 8-12 overall and 7-11 in the Genesee Area Conference Blue Division.
