ALMA — Central Montcalm’s girls basketball season came to an end compliments of the Shpeherd Bluejays Wednesday.

The Green Hornets lost in the Class B district semifinals to Shepherd 60-41.

The biggest reason for the large deficit was the lack of Central offense. They had only three field goals in the first half and didn’t get their second until there was 6:30 left in the second quarter.

“We got frustrated and didn’t recover quick enough,” Central coach Kevin Everingham said.

Meanwhile Shepherd (15-6) jumped out to a 19-4 lead after one quarter, then Hannah Yesmut scored seven of the 12 Bluejay points in the second quarter.

“We needed a halftime in the first quarter,” Everingham joked.

Central scored seven points in the second frame for a 31-11 deficit. They doubled their score in the third quarter plus two points.

“Instead of our standard offense we tried to utilize our post players on a give-and-go,” Everingham said. “It seemed to work for them (Shepherd).”

Defensively Everingham tried to stop the penetration and kick-out of Yesmut.

“We tried a couple of things,” he said. “We were trying to stop the inside driving she was doing.”

The third quarter was the only quarter the Hornets (7-14) were able to win. Both teams had 17 points in the final quarter.

Central was led by Michaela Crooks with 13 points and Savannah Case added nine.

The Bluejays had only five players score, led by Taylor Cole with 19 and Yesmut with 17-15 in the first half.

“They (Shepherd) were everywhere we wanted to go,” Everingham said. “They had what we were doing from the start.”

With the season over, the first-year coach said he knows what has to happen for the Hornets to improve next year.

“I see lots of stuff we need to work on,” he said. “We know what we need to work on and what to do.”

The Bluejays, meanwhile, will face Tri-Valley Conference Central Division archrival Alma in Alma’s gym Friday in the district final.
