Lakeview downed in district semifinal

ALMA — The hot shooting that Lakeview’s girls basketball team had in the first game of the Class B district final at Alma Monday disappeared in stretches Wednesday.

The offense came back in the fourth quarter but it wasn’t enough in a 65-58 loss.

“They (Alma) shot it like we did Monday,” Lakeview coach Dave King said.

Both teams were able to make baskets in the first quarter, as the score ended 19-17 Alma.

But the Wildcats (15-7) made only four field goals in the second quarter and trailed 36-30 at the half.

“I thought the offensive flow was OK,” King said. “We just didn’t make shots.”

King wanted his team to come out strong in the second half.

“We talked a lot about winning the first four minutes,” he said. “We didn’t.”

Instead the Panthers (9-12) opened the third quarter with a 5-0 run. In that time Lakeview had a missed shot and five straight turnovers.

In the end, Alma outscored the Wildcats 12-9 and led 48-39 after three quarters.

Lakeview battled back enough to tie the game at 56 on a Maddie Shurlow three-pointer with 1:57 left in the game. But they made nothing the rest of the way.

“I thought we had a good game plan and we didn’t execute it,” King said.

The Wildcats got 13 points from Shurlow — 12 in the fourth quarter — and 10 each from Andrea Henry and Lauren Jaquays.

But Lakeview had no answer for Maddy Seeley, who canned 29 points, including 16 in the second half.

“I thought she (Seeley) stepped in at the right moments,” said Alma coach Jennie IntVeld, a 2002 Carson City-Crystal graduate and former Daily News Female Athlete of the Year. “That stretch she had (in the fourth quarter) gave us some breathing room.”

“Seeley is a good player but their supporting cast shot the ball well,” King said.

IntVeld said Lakeview was a good team if hard to scout.

“It’s hard when you don’t play them (Lakeview) in the regular season,” she said. “We didn’t allow their scorers to get going.”

Alma got 16 more from Andrea Fell.

Lakeview’s season is done, while Alma will get another shot at Shepherd, a team the Panthers faced twice in the regular season as both teams are in the Tri-Valley Conference Central Division.
