CRYSTAL TOWNSHIP — An man has been arrested and charged with attempting to steal metal in Crystal Township.
Montcalm County Sheriff’s deputies received a call at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
Investigation revealed that Trevor Haynak, 20, of Ithaca, and a 16-year-old youth from Ithaca were in Crystal when they spotted an area among some trees. The area contained several metal items. The two began to load items they found with the intention of selling the metal items for scrap when they were confronted by the owner. The two remained at the scene while deputies responded. All of the items were returned to their original location.
Haynak was arraigned Monday on a charge of larceny of more than $200 but less than $1,000, a misdemeanor. A bond of $1,000 was set at the arraignment.
A juvenile petition has been forwarded to the prosecutor’s office for review on the 16-year-old.
According to Montcalm County Det. Sgt. Thomas Goerge, the theft of metal items with the intention of selling them for scrap continues to be an ongoing problem throughout Michigan.
