Driver arrested after high-speed chase in Belding

BELDING — A driver was arrested after stealing a vehicle and leading police on a high-speed chase through Ionia and Kent counties.

At about 10:10 p.m. on Saturday, the Belding Police Department received information about a vehicle — allegedly stolen earlier in evening — that was spotted in the Long Lake area, east of Belding.

The vehicle was the spotted on westbound Kiddville Street by a Belding officer who attempted to stop the vehicle.

The vehicle sped up and failed to stop. It then continued through Belding to M-44 at an excessive rate of speed.

The driver continued west on M-44 and avoided spike strips that were deployed at M-44 and Myers Lake Road.

At Blakely and M-44, the Michigan State Police took over the pursuit and stopped the vehicle at Kroes and Northland Drive.

The driver and passenger were taken into custody. The driver is lodged at the Ionia County Jail.

The passenger, who was a juvenile, was released to parents.

The case remains under investigation.
