MOORLAND TOWNSHIP — A local woman is dead and her son is behind bars after a disturbing accident over the weekend in Muskegon County.
According to the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office, Alicia Keech, 45, of Pierson, was driving a Dodge Durango westbound on Apple Avenue between Sullivan and Moorland roads in Moorland Township at about 12:15 p.m. Friday. Keech’s son, Lorenzo Martinez, 20, of Pierson, was a passenger in the front seat. Keech’s son, Martin Martinez, 26, of Cedar Springs, was a passenger in the back seat, as was Jamie Kinsley, 30, of Cedar Springs.
While Keech was driving, Lorenzo Martinez allegedly grabbed the steering wheel and jerked it, causing the Durango to go into the opposite lane and collide with an eastbound semi truck. Keech was killed immediately. Lorenzo Martinez, Martin Martinez and Kinsley all sustained injuries.
Lorenzo Martin was arraigned and charged Monday with manslaughter with a motor vehicle, a felony. According to Muskegon County Prosecutor D.J. Hilson, a mental health review has been ordered before the case proceeds. The review will likely take several months to complete.
“He’s had some contact with the mental health system,” said Hilson of Lorenzo Martinez. “The judge felt it necessary to send him to the forensic center for evaluation.”
According to her obituary, Keech was a graduate of Reeths-Puffer High School and worked at Wesco in Cedar Springs. She is survived by her husband, Charles Keech Jr., her children, Martin Martinez, Amy Swain, Lola Martinez, Lorenzo Martinez and Antonia Martinez, three grandchildren, her parents, Ralph and Geraldine Gibbs, and her sister, Kathleen Ferski.
Visitation for Keech is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Bliss-Witters & Pike Funeral Home in Cedar Springs. There will be no funeral services.
