BELDING — The Belding Redskins track teams opened the season with a pair of conference wins against the Grand Rapids Creston Polar Bears on Tuesday at home.

The girls squad won 110-26, while the boys won 94-43.

Monica Baylis, Danielle Rode, Samantha Parker and Greta Wilker each won two events.

Baylis won the 800-meter run (2:34.53) and the 1,600 run (5:37.91). Rode won the 400 dash (1:07.33) and the pole vault (8-6). Parker won the 100 hurdles (17-40) and 300 hurdles (54.34), while Wilker won the shot put (38-6) and discus (98-11).

Wilker, a freshman, set the school record with her throw in the shot put.

Teresa Myles also set a school record with a first place finish in the 3,200 run with 12:30.38.

“We set two school records today. Teresa Myles broke the 3,200 meter record with a time of 12:30.38.  The old record was set in 2004 by Rachael Weeks,” Belding coach John Carlson said. “Greta Wilker also broke the shot put record in her first high school meet with a toss of 38-6. The old record was set by EllaKate Wagner in 2010.”

Mackenzie Sower won the high jump (4-8) and Ashley Ross the long jump (14-7).

Belding won the 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Trevor Curtis and Austin Alexander each won two events for the boys team.

Alexander won the pole vault (13-6) and the 300 hurdles (45.06). Curtis won the 800 run (2:14.19) and the 1,600 run (4:45.16).

Brendan Sutherland won the high jump (6-0), Mitch Dykla the long jump (10-2), Bryce Wilker the shot put (40-01) and Jake Jones the discus (121-0) to sweep the field events.

Brendan Zuver won the 100 dash in 11.49 and Eric Rasch the 3,200 run in 10:53.46.

“It was nice to have Brendan Zuver this season. He missed last year with a broken foot and he blitzed a 11.49 FAT in the 100 meters today,” Carlson said.

Belding won all three relays.

The Redskins will host Comstock Park on Thursday.
