Central falls twice: The Green Hornets went down to the Vestaburg Wolverines in a doubleheader Thursday, losing 9-8 and 12-9. In game one, Cody Veltkamp took the loss, giving up a game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. He went 6 2/3 innings and struck out eight, while walking four and scattering six hits. Jesse Petersen was the only Central player with multiple hits, rapping out two doubles. The second-game loss went to Terran Ellsworth, who went the first four innings of the six-inning game and struck out three while walking two and allowing eight hits. The only multiple hitter was Oryan Wetherington with three hits and three RBIs. Record: 3-3. Next games: at home against Holton today.
Comstock Park 13, Belding 1: The Redskins were mercied in five innings at Comstock Park on Thursday afternoon. The Panthers scored five runs in the first, five in the third and three in the fifth. Belding scored its lone run in the third inning. Record: 3-2 (2-2). Next games: at Allendale Tuesday.
Cedar Springs 5. Greenville 1: The Yellow Jackets lost the third game of the three-game series Thursday. Lexii Canterbury took the loss when she went the distance and allowed five hits while walking five and striking out four. Liz Niemiec was 3-for-3 and Sarah Newhouse had the only RBI for Greenville. Comstock Park 4, Belding 3: The Panthers won the third game of the three-game series Thursday when Caitlin Alkire walked in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to take the loss. She pitched the last 4 2/3 innings and allowed four hits and three walks, fanning two. Rachel Hunt was 3-for-4 and Greta Wilker was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Records: 4-1 and 3-1. Greenville drops two: The Yellow Jackets lost a double-dual in the O-K Bronze Conference Thursday, losing to Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern 91-46 and to Cedar Springs 73 1/3-63 2/3. Greenville’s only first was from Greg Krusniak in the shot put (43-3). He also added a second in the discus (117-1). Tyler Rasmussen had three places, taking a third in the 200 (24.34) and was a member of the second-place 400-meter relay team (46.04) and the second-place 800-meter relay team (1:35.36). Carter Stephens also was on both those teams and was third in the 100 (11.66). Record: 1-2. Next meet: at the Lowell Invitational Saturday.
Belding boys split triangular: The Redskins were losers to Coopersville 87-50 but they beat Comstock Park 93-43. Brendan Zuver led Belding with four firsts, winning the 100 (11:54) and the 200 (23.74) and was a member of the winning 400-meter relay team (46.64) and the winning 800-meter relay team (1:36.96). Next meet: at home against Sparta Tuesday.
Greenville splits a pair: The Yellow Jackets won half of a double-dual Thursday when they beat Cedar Springs 81-56 but lost to host Grand Rapids Forest Hills Eastern 76-60. Audrey Wyse had three firsts, including increasing her own school record in the pole vault (11-0). She also won the 100-meter hurdles (17.41) and the 300-meter hurdles (47.65). Taylor Baker added four firsts for Greenville, winning the long jump (15-8), the 400 (1:02.05), the 200 (26.66) and the 100 (12.93). Record: 2-1. Next meet: at the Lowell Invitational Saturday.
Belding takes two: The Redskin girls were double-winners in a triangular Thursday, beating Coopersville 93-44 and Comstock Park 115-20. Monica Baylis led Belding with a wins in the 1,600 (5:37.91) and the 800 (2:30.92) and was a member of the winning 1,600-meter relay (4:29.28) and 3,200-meter relay (10:28.48). Mackenzie Briemayer was the winner of the 100 (13.22) and was a member of the winning 400-meter relay (55.49) and the 800-meter relay teams (1:57.34). Next meet: at home against Sparta Tuesday.
