IONIA — When Tina Possehn and Greg Wolbers tied the knot in 1994, it was as much a business merger as it was a wedding. All these years later, they both still consider it a match made in heaven.

Tina had been running Possehn Pools, a company established in 1976 that she inherited from her parents; Greg was owner of Wolbers Landscaping, which he had been running since 1988. It didn’t take long before they realized the two businesses could offer more services and run more efficiently if they merged.

The couple recently celebrated their time in business together and the anniversaries of both businesses — 25 years for Wobers and 35 for Possehn — with a ribbon cutting ceremony at their retail outlet at 1276 N. State St. in Ionia. Employees, friends and many long term, loyal customers were invited.

The celebration continues with a five-day sale starting May 6 and culminating with the business’ popular Pool School event May 11.

The Pool School has proven very popular in the past, according to store administrative assistant Crystal Townsend.

“We’re having a great sale all week leading up to the Pool School,” Townsend said. “At the Pool School, we teach people how to maintain their pools and what to check for when their are problems. We give them some very good educational tools.”

There’s also plenty of activities for adults and kids, such as coloring stations, seed planting activities, a bounce house and plenty of free food. There is no charge for the event.

Since merging the businesses, Wolbers-Possehn is able to create stunning in-ground pools, ponds and surrounding landscapes from the ground up. According to general manager Nicholas J. DiOrio, he’s personally designed several installations.

“I’m about 50-50 in the office and on site,” DiOrio said. “I’m proud of the work we do.”

The company performs installations throughout West Michigan, including in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Okemos, Greenville and other communities.

“We do everything from the design to the finished product,” Townsend said. “We can build from your imagination and then just go from there and take it all the way through to the finish. We have some very talented and dedicated people.”
