Russell “Rusty” Schlienz isn’t slowing down even after 52 years of cutting hair in Greenville. His recent move to L’Image salon is just one of several he has made over the years.

GREENVILLE — For more than five decades, Russell “Rusty” Schlienz has done his part to keep Greenville beautiful, one head of hair at a time, and he’s not about to stop now, despite rumors to the contrary.
Though having recently shut the doors to his previous salon, La Casa De Rusel, Schlienz continues to cut hair at L’Image, located at 328 S. Lafayette St.
The move was prompted by Schlienz’s desire to reduce his ongoing business expenses.
“I closed because of the overhead,” Schlienz explained. “My wife, Janine, was also a hairdresser, but she got to retire, lucky. What I do now is rent a chair from Barb (Van Hoose, L’Image owner). I’m still essentially my own boss, but at the end of the day, I don’t have to worry whether the windows need cleaning or the lawn needs mowing.”
Schlienz added that most of his clients already know about his recent move, though some still stop him on the street to congratulate him on his “retirement.” Retirement, however, is probably not in the cards for Schlienz for some time yet.
“I started in the business 52 years ago only two blocks from (L’Image),” Schlienz said. “I guess I’ve come full circle. I’ll probably fill up the rest of my life here. I’m not sure what I’d do with retirement anyway.”
Schlienz’s recently closed salon was located behind the Admiral Gas Station on Washington.
