JUST IN: Couple arrested for Whites Covered Bridge metal theft

OTISCO TOWNSHIP — An Orleans Township couple has been arrested and charged with stealing metal from the former Whites Covered Bridge, which was destroyed by a Sunday morning fire.

Ionia County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to the location of the destroyed bridge at 11:59 a.m. Tuesday after it was reported two people were stealing metal from the remains of the bridge structure.

A 33-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, both from Orleans Township, allegedly loaded more than 300 pounds of metal from the bridge into a pickup truck and attempted to flee the area before being stopped and subsequently arrested by deputies.

The man and woman were lodged in the Ionia County Jail and charged with larceny. Their names have not yet been released pending arraignment in 64A District Court.
