STANTON - Police are investigating the weekend arson of a Stanton home.
The Stanton Fire Department was dispatched to 322 McPherson St. at 2:49 a.m. Saturday on a report of a house fire.
According to Fire Chief Brian Brasington, the home was vacant at the time of the fire.
The property is owned by Katherine Bigelow of Edmore, according to Montcalm County property tax records. Bigelow could not be reached for comment.
The Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit was called in for assistance. Sgt. Trever Slater investigated the scene today, with the assistance of Stanton firefighters and a Michigan State Police canine unit. Slater determined that the cause of the fire was arson.
Another arson earlier this year in Stanton remains unsolved.
The Stanton Fire Department was called to a car fire at Weatherbrook Auto Sales at 106 S. State St. at 5:52 p.m. Saturday, April 20. The Stanton Police Department also responded to the scene.
Officers found a 1994 Mercury Tracer fully engulfed in flames. The car was a total loss.
A Michigan State Police fire marshal examined the car and determined the cause of the fire was arson.
Weatherbrook Auto Sales is owned by Rudy and Pam Weatherington and son, Derek Wagner. Pam Weatherington said the burnt car was valued at an estimated $1,500. She said she has no idea who would want to do something like this at her family business.
According to Police Chief Joe Patino, there have been no tips and no arrests in the car arson case.
“Our police department has two ongoing arson investigations,” said Stanton City Manager James Freed. “They are utilizing both local and state resources in their efforts.”
Michigan Arson Prevention pays up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of arsonists. Anyone with information about either one of the Stanton arsons is asked to call 1-800-44-ARSON or the Stanton Police Department at (989) 831-4440.
