CATO TOWNSHIP — Firefighters from two area fire departments battled a sizable grass fire for about two hours Thursday afternoon near Lakeview.

The Lakeview District Fire Department was dispatched to 7060 W. Townline Lake Road at about 2:03 p.m.

The property is owned by Charles and Carol Sherman and is located at the northwest corner of the Townline Lake Road and Backus Road intersection.

According to Lakeview Fire Chief Patrick Q. Carr, the fire burned about 15 acres, along with several pieces of older farm equipment and a few other items. The fire came close to burning the Sherman’s home and several sheds, but the lawn had recently been mowed, helping slow down the travel of the flames.

“It was a pretty good fire as far as grass fires go,” Carr said. “It just kind of wandered around and burned 10 or 15 acres. It was a little hairy.”

The Belvidere Township Fire Department responded as mutual aid.

Carr said the cause of the fire is undetermined, but not suspicious at this time.
