GREENVILLE — The 49th annual Danish Festival was filled with great memories, fun event and shopping and even prizes that thrilled six local residents.

Over the weekend, many who visited Greenville purchased raffle tickets for a chance to win the grand prize of money towards a trip to Denmark.

For Charles Zemla of St. Johns, he was lucky enough to have his ticket drawn.

“I was excited,” he said. “It’s the biggest thing I have ever won.”

Charles Zemla of St. Johns won the Danish Festival grand-prize raffle for money towards a trip to Denmark. Zemla chose a $2,000 cash option over $2,500 towards the trip.

Danish Festival Executive Director Pamela Jorae said Zemla had the option of taking $2,500 toward a trip to Denmark or $2,000 cash. He chose the cash options.

Fiver other local winners also had lucky tickets in their hands.

Carl Hansen of Sheridan won a Mackinac Island golf getaway.

“I am going to have to learn to golf,” Hansen said excitedly with a big smile on his face.

Ron Cooper of Sheridan won a one-year membership to The Club Fitness in Greenville.

“I get a free year!” Cooper said was his reaction to his winning ticket.

Stanton resident Deanna Butterworth won a Night to Remember.

“My thought was it is going to be an awesome date night with my husband,” Butterworth said of when she found out what she had won.

Greenville resident Les Lillie said he had to listen to his voicemail twice when he found out he won a mini fridge.

“I didn’t believe it,” he said, laughing.

Tom Russell of Greenville was also shocked when he found out he won a recliner.

“I was in disbelief,” Russell said. “I have never won anything before.”

Jorae said the Danish Festival Board of Directors is planning for the 50th annual Danish Festival next year and are open to suggestions from the community.
