STANTON — Saturday morning was the perfect time to take a swim, ride a bike or go for a run.

Saturday morning was so nice, 165 individuals and/or teams of three all decided to swim, bike and run. They did so as part of the fourth annual Clifford Lake Triathlon in Stanton.

Four years ago, just 49 participants competed in the triathlon. More than 200 did so a year ago and 165 did so on Saturday.

“That is an amazing growth in four years,” McKeown said. “What a great event and it all supports the Central Montcalm girls basketball program. We enjoy giving back to the youth.”

The triathlon consists of a half mile swim across Clifford Lake, starting at the Inn. From there, bikers ride out four and a half miles before heading back to the staging area. Runners then finish the race with a two mile run, crossing the finish line at Clifford Lake Inn.

“I like this event because there is no pressure at all,” triathlete Lorraine Shank said. “There are no chips. It’s just do your very best and have fun with it.”

Shank, from DeWitt, competed in this event for the second time.

“The swim is such a good challenge,” Shank said. “It’s a little longer than most sprints. I had a really good time.”

Shank was one of many participants from outside of the area. A group from Washington State even competed.

“We have some people here from Washington State this year,” McKeown said. “They travel all around for these events and one of the things they like about ours is it’s an easy going event.”

For the first time, the Clifford Lake Triathlon featured a kids event. And 14 kids took advantage of it.

McKeown thanked the many volunteers and the residents around the Inn.

“This would not be possible with the volunteers and the great Lake Association we have,” McKeown said. “They are tremendous to help us pull this off. They work really well with us to run this event.”

Next year’s event will be held on Aug. 23, 2014. It will be the fifth anniversary for the event.

“We are a little down this year, but there were a lot of other events going in this year,” McKeown said. “Next year will be our fifth year so we will be shooting to do some special things.”
