GREENVILLE — The Greenville Yellow Jackets girls cross country team is just one of many competing today at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Chippewa Hills.
Today’s event will be the first of the season for the Yellow Jackets. Area schools Lakeview and Montabella will also compete at the Warrior Invitational.
The Yellow Jackets return eight letter winners from last year’s team — seven of which are seniors. Returning are Sarah Austin, Julia Hansen, Ali Loding, Madison Sorsen, Autumn Strandberg, Rebekah Hamman, Rachelle Hinken and Clarice Callahan. Hansen and Sorsen are the team captains this year.
“This year’s team is a group of dedicated, passionate and hard working athletes,” second year coach Chelsea Cates said. “They have goals in mind and are willing to put in the miles that it takes to achieve them.”
Cates has plenty of goals for her team, but mostly she is trying to develop a passion for running.
“My primary coaching goal is to help my team develop a lifelong passion for running,” Cates said. “I hope to help my athletes develop into runners who are strong both mentally and physically.
“I also hope to help my athletes achieve personal records and celebrate these important personal victories,” she added.
Greenville finished fifth in the O-K Bronze last year, but would like to improve upon that this season. Their first conference race will take place Sept. 4 at West Catholic.
The O-K Bronze features plenty of talented runners and teams.
“Cedar Springs and Forest Hills Eastern have some great athletes,” Cates said. “We are hoping to compete with these teams and move up our place in the conference.”
The Yellow Jackets will also compete at the Hornet Invitational (Central Montcalm) on Sept. 7.
