UPDATE: Man kills himself amid suspicious fire in Eureka Township

 EUREKA TOWNSHIP — A man is dead and police are investigating a suspicious house fire near Greenville.

Firefighters were dispatched at 7:54 p.m. Wednesday to a fully involved house fire at 11238 W. Baker Road in Eureka Township.

Family members of the homeowner who live nearby first spotted smoke at the residence and went to investigate. Upon arrival, they found the homeowner, a 35-year-old Greenville man, lying outside the home. The man was pronounced dead at the scene and is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Montcalm County sheriff’s office.

According to Montcalm County Sheriff’s Sgt. Andy Doezema, the sheriff’s office and the Greenville Department of Public Safety are investigating the “suspicious” house fire together. The cause of the fire has not yet been released and remains under investigation.

The Montcalm Township and Belding fire departments, Montcalm County Emergency Medical Services and Michigan State Police all assisted at the scene of the fire.
