Belding wins own tournament: The Redskins went 1-0-2 in rounbd-robin play at their own invitational Saturday, then faced Grand Rapids West Catholic in the finals and won 25-17, 25-13 to win the tournament. Belding opened with a split with CC-Crystal 18-25, 25-16, then beat Comstock Park 25-19, 25-16 before splitting with the Falcons 25-16, 23-25 in the last round-robin match. Gabby Holyfield led in kills with 32 and blocks with seven, Brooke Linebaugh had 78 assists, Rachel Hunt dug up 33 attacks and Greta Wilker had four aces. Record: 12-2-4. Next match: at Sparta Tuesday.

CC-Crystal 1-2-1 at Belding: After splitting with the host Redskins in the first match of round-robin play, the Eagles lost to West Catholic 25-17, 25-16. CC-Crystal then beat Comstock Park 25-22, 25-16, then in the third-place match lost to the Panthers 25-18, 23-25, 17-15. Leading in kills was Mackenzie Geister with 25 and nine aces. Jaylin Fisher dished ut 44 assists, Sierra Assemany had 23 digs, Tori Christensen had four blocks. Record: 14-7-4. Next match: at home against Ashley Tuesday.

Lakeview 4-1-1 at Big Rapids: The Wildcats got pool play off to a good start at the Big Rapids Invitational Saturday, beating Tri County 25-20, 25-21. Lakeview then split with Newaygo 25-12, 15-25 and beat Montabella 25-11, 25-11. In bracket play the Wildcats beat Manton 25-16, 25-16 before losing to Grant 25-11, 25-6 and beating the host Cardinals 25-11, 26-24. Statistical leaders were Sadie Massey with 24 kills, Genevieve Moore with 36 assists, Estelle Molitor with 12 aces, Molitor and Kristen Johnson with 18 digs each and Mackenzie Oberl with seven blocks. Record: 5-8-5. Next match: at Newaygo Wednesday.


Cross Country

Greenville eighth, sixth at Sparta: The Yellow Jackets were in the Blue Division of the Sparta Invitational Saturday, and the boys placed eighth with a 190 score while the girls were sixth with a 179. Greenville’s boys were led by Kenneth Wood in 31st (18:15.82), Jered Milner in 34th (19:12.19), Andrew Mason in 36th (19:17.21), Josh scott in 44th (19:31.17) and Stephen Hilliker in 45th (19:32.29). The Jacket girls were led by Madison Sorsen in 21st (21:11.64), Sarah Austin in 24th (21:38.10), Sutumn Strandberg in 43rd (23:49.57), Hannah Crittenden in 45th (23:58.57) and Julia Hansen in 46th (24:30.89). Next meet: at home for an O-K Bronze jamboree Wednesday.

Belding seventh, third at Sparta: The Redskins scored 152 points for seventh in the White Division of the Sparta Invitational Saturday, while the girls had an 85 for third. The boys got an eighth from Trevor Curtis (17:38.18), a 19th from Sam Syrjala (18:11.48), a 40th from Michael Albert (19:30.07), a 42nd from Matt Feuerstein (19:32.33) and a 43rd from Tyler Gasper (19L32.73). For Belding’s girls, Teresa Myles was ninth (20L31.56), Emily Wucher was 16th (21:38.94, Alexa Syrjala was 19th (22:05.20), Rachel Warner was 20th (22:07.95) and Jasmine Harrison was 21st (22:29.45). Next meet: at the Cedar Springs Invitational next Saturday.

Lakeview girls fourth at Sparta: The Wildcat girls were fourth in the five-team Silver Division of the Sparta Invitational Saturday, scoring 113 points to just beat Hudsonville Freedom Baptist by two. Anniken Sieha led Lakeview with a 17th (23:35.55), Natasna Sanders was 19th (23:49.63), Abbi Anderson was 40th (27:43.22), Audry Cornell was 41st (27:52.63) and Danielle Grant was 46th (30:58.96). Next meet: at Big Rapids for a CSAA jamboree Sept. 24.

Montabella wins at Harrison: The Mustangs not only won the girls’ side of the Harrison Invitational Saturday, they also took home the co-ed trophy. The girls scored 39 points, led by Taylor Smith with an overall first place (21:10) and Kensington Garvey with an overall second place (21:39). Kim Buskirk was ninth (23:19), Alyviah Karcher was 13th (24:01 and Brynn Lobert was 14th (24:02). The guys scored 151 points, getting a fifth place from Christian Watson (18:57) a 17th place from Kelton Eldred (20:02), a 40th from Dakota Lobert (21:55), a 43rd from Joel Bucao (22:05) and a 48th from Eli Albring (22:53). Next meet: at Coleman for an MSAC jamboree Wednesday.

CC-Crystal girls 12th at MSU: The Eagles ran in the White Division of Division 3-4 teams at Michigan State University and finished 12th out of 27 teams. The girls were led by Elizabeth McCrackin in 42nd (21:14), followed by Kaitlin Beyer in 54th (21:37), Taylor Ward in 55th (21:48), Karagan Kavanaugh in 85th (22:50) and Makayla Baker in 96th (23:05). There were only three boys that ran, so a team score could not be made. Tyler Craig was seventh overall (17:03), Kolton Kavanaugh was 21st (17:31) and Jeremy Bigford was 76th (18:36). Next meet: at Coleman for an MSAC jamboree Wednesday.



Greenville 6, Sparta 2: The Yellow Jackets got a road win Friday, knocking off the Spartans by sweeping the doubles flights. Winners in singles were Brandon Brom and Sam Lindeman, while the doubles teams of Matt LeBlanc and Jared Gager, Chris Ralph and Ryan Sprague, Bryan Edwards and Alex Budge and Austin Heran and Noah Gager were all winners. Next match: at home against Northview today.
