SPENCER TOWNSHIP — A Gowen man who was on his way to church Sunday morning has died after his vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.

According to the Kent County Sheriff’s Office, Jimmie Scofield, 58, was traveling southbound in a blue pickup truck on Lincoln Lake Avenue just after 8 a.m. near 17 Mile Road when he crossed the center line, traveled off the road and hit a power pole.

His vehicle then overturned, hit a wood fence and then a large tree.

Emergency crews extricated Scofield from his vehicle, but he later died on scene.

Scofield was wearing a seatbelt and alcohol was not a factor in the crash

Officials are not sure what caused Scofield to lose control of the vehicle and the accident remains under investigation.

Lincoln Lake Road from 16 Mile to Fargo roads was closed for more than five hours Sunday as officials cleared the scene and Consumers Energy restored power to the area.
