Montabella girls win XC league title

MOUNT PLEASANT — For the first time in school history, the Montabella Mustangs girls cross country team won its league championship.

The Mustangs finished first on Wednesday with a score of 28 points, while Carson City-Crystal was second with 41. Montabella edged out the Eagles for the Mid-State Athletic Conference title with a three meet total of 97. Again, Carson City-Crystal was second with 139.

The host Sacred Heart Irish were third with 58 points and Vestaburg fourth with 92 points on Wednesday.

Earning first team league honors for Montabella was Taylor Smith and Kensington Garvey. Kim Buskirk and Alyvia Karcher earned honorable mentions.

Smith won the meet with a time of 19:21. Garvey was third (20:28), Buskirk sixth (21:48), Karcher eighth (22:06) and Brynn Lobert 10th (22:17).

Carson City-Crystal’s Kaitlin Beyer was first team, while Elizabeth McCrackin and Taylor Ward were honorable mention.

Beyer was second on Wednesday with a time of 19:45. McCrackin was fifth (21:36), Ward seventh (22:05), Makayla Baker 13th (22:48) and Karagan Kavanagh 14th (22:50.

Johannah McCarty was ninth for Vestaburg with a time of 22:16. Andreya McCarty was 17th (23:22) and Shiane Hallock 19th (24:58).

On the boys side, Sacred Heart edged out the Eagles for the league title 102-109. Sacred Heart scored 27 on Thursday, while the Eagles were second with 43.

Montabella was third with 53 points and third overall.

Carson City-Crystal’s Tyler Craig was first team MSAC as was Kolton Kavanagh. Jeremy Bigford was honorable mention.

Craig finished first on Wednesday with 17:09. Kavanagh was fourth (17:36), Taylor Benavidez ninth (19:05) and Cody Flinn 11th (20:04).

Montabella’s Kelton Eldred was first team. He places sixth with a time of 17:40. Christian Watson earned honorable mention and was eighth overall at 18:56.

Michael Hyde finished 12th (20:10), Joel Bucao 13th (20:22) and Dakoda Lobert 14th (20:23)

Vestaburg did not field enough runners to earn a team score, but Tyler Gondek was 15th overall with a time of 20:39. Kirklyn Edwards was 23rd (22:16) and Brendan Davidson 24th (23:51).

Carson City-Crystal will compete at the Alma College Scottie Classic on Friday. Vestaburg will race at the Chippewa Hills Warrior Late Season Invitational on Saturday. Next on Montabella’s schedule is the Division 4 regional race at Carson City on Oct. 26.
