Belding man dies in Hastings crash

IRVING TOWNSHIP — A 54-year-old Belding man was killed Friday night near Hastings when the vehicle he was driving left the roadway and struck a tree.

Mark Edwin Byrne was traveling northbound on Woodschool Road near Sisson Road around 7 p.m. when his vehicle left the east shoulder of the road, according to a press release from the Barry County Sheriff’s Office. Byrne was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash is still under investigation.

According to Byrne’s obituary, he enjoyed farming, starting at the age of 14 working for Walt and Louise Wittenbach on their farm. For many years, Byrne worked on the farm and in the fiberglass industry.

He was known for being a hard worker, a good friend and always willing to help
others. Byrne enjoyed restoring antique farm tractors, cutting wood, hunting, fishing and giving rides on the Gator with his grandchildren.
