If all goes according to plan, this village may find itself the recipient of $196,000 in state grant funds, money that will be used to provide a complete survey and mapping of its water and sewer infrastructure.

Eureka Township board to give itself a raise

The Eureka Township Board has proposed a $783,000 budget for the 2014 fiscal year, a budget slightly thinner than the current year but including a small raise for administration and some board members.

Montcalm County Board of Commissioners chairman apologizes for public comment session

The chairman of the Montcalm County Board of Commissioners began Tuesday’s meeting with an apology. Commissioner Patrick Q. Carr of Lakeview spoke up during public comment to reference another public comment — one at the Oct. 28 board meeting. Almost an hour of public comments were heard at that meeting regarding a proposed secondhand dealer ordinance, primarily authored by Commissioner Steve DeWitt of Coral.

Montcalm Alliance aiming for countywide millage

A local economic development group has become as stagnant or more so than the local economy it’s trying to help. The Montcalm Alliance hasn’t met in months. The group has suffered a net loss of almost $20,000 in the past year and incurred a debt of $6,750 to cover operational shortfalls. The current membership list hasn’t been updated online since 2010 and the website (montcalmalliance.com) and Facebook page haven’t been updated since 2011.

Hometown Hornets to face Harlem Wizards

The Harlem Wizards are coming to Central Montcalm High School. The Wizards are a show basketball team that combines comedy, athleticism, tricks, teamwork, dazzling ball-handling and extreme dunks.

Greenville OKs purchase of new Spanish textbooks

Students will continue to be able to pursue foreign language studies at Greenville Public Schools thanks to some new textbooks. The school board voted 6-0 at Monday night’s meeting to purchase five student textbooks and one teacher’s textbook for use in Advanced Placement (AP) Spanish classes.

Belding’s season ends at regionals

Belding’s volleyball season came to a tough end Tuesday night. The Redskins were downed in the Class B regional semifinal by the Saginaw Swan Valley Vikings in four games, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22, 25-22.
