BELVIDERE TOWNSHIP — A single-story home on Indianhead Lake near Six Lakes was gutted by a Monday morning fire.
Belvidere Township Fire Chief Rick Rockafellow said the home, located at 4585 Pawnee Trail, was a complete loss after flames ripped through the inside.
“(Smoke) was all over the roof when we got here,” he said. “By the time we got the first line on it, the flames were straight out of the roof.”
Battling the cold, firefighters from Belvidere Township, Home Township and Lakeview fire departments had the fire under control within two hours.
The residents, a couple renting the home from family members, were not home during the blaze, according to neighbors. However, Rockafellow said two dogs were killed in the fire.
Emergency personnel were called to the scene after neighbors Angela and James Peabody noticed something wrong.
Shortly after 9 a.m., James Peabody said he saw smoke coming from the home and noticed it wasn’t from any sort of vent.
“I just looked out the window. I saw smoke coming out of the soffit, and it isn’t supposed to come out of the soffit,” he said.
He said he figured the couple had left for work, but knew they had two dogs. James Peabody said he considered trying to enter the home to let the dogs out, but the smoke and flames were too big.
Rockafellow said he had not heard from the homeowners at the scene, but the Peabody’s said another neighbor had notified them at their respective workplaces.
The cause of the fire is unknown and is still under investigation.
