Lakeview’s Myranda Lake (23) and Lexi Smythe (10) battle for a rebound surrounded by Central Montcalm players during the two teams’ game Monday night.

LAKEVIEW — Two girls basketball teams going in opposite directions met at Cook Gymnasium Monday night.

The result didn’t change the direction either team was going.

The Lakeview Wildcats continued their winning ways with a 61-39 win over Central Montcalm in a game the Wildcats dominated from the start.

“The first half, especially,” Lakeview coach Dave King said. “Maddie Shurlow came out with energy on the offensive end and looked to score. She’s been more of a dish-it-off kind of player and (Monday night) she was a shoot-first type player.”

Shurlow led the Wildcats with 18 points, 16 of which came in the first half – a first half that saw Lakeview (7-2, 6-1) get out to a 9-0 run over the first 2:49 of the game and a 17-4 run over the first 6:51 before the Green Hornets scored their first field goal.

“We wanted to ball-pressure a lot,” King said. “They (Central) are a little thin at the guard position. I thought Estelle Molitor especially did a great job high on (Ashton) Bowen and made her pick up her dribble an awful lot and denied from there.”

The Wildcats led 19-6 after the first quarter, then opened the second on a 12-1 run over the first 5:16 of the second quarter. They opened up a 39-11 lead at halftime.

“The first half, trying to stop Shurlow and we didn’t find a way to do it,” said Central coach Kevin Everingham.

Meanwhile, the Green Hornet offense was held to just two field goals in the first 16 minutes.

“It wasn’t working,” Everingham said. “It’s the offense that we’ve been working on, we’ve been waiting to run it and it just wasn’t working. When we switched it in the second half it helped a lot.”

Central (1-7, 1-5) finally got the offense going in the third quarter, led by Bohen getting nine of her team-high 18 in the quarter.

“We switched to a completely different four-out offense instead of the one we were running,” Everingham said. “We were running a screen offense and it was getting clogged up and we couldn’t get our passes where they needed to go.”

But by then Lakeview led 54-25 and the Hornets couldn’t come back.

Shurlow was backed by 13 from Sadie Massey. Bohen’s 18 was backed by Savannah Case with nine.

“She (Bohen) did a fantasic job,” Everingham said. “She worked her butt off. That’s what we talked about at halftime. In the first half, we were jogging down the court. A couple of them (Central) really picked it up a lot in the second half.”

Lakeview will head to White Cloud Thursday while Central will host Reed City.
